Delek fined by OSHA for a fire at a refinery in Texas

After two people died, OSHA (short for Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has fined Delek, a Brentwood based oil refinery, for 30 safety violations. The two were killed in a fire and an explosion that took place in November.

OSHA issued some time back a set of rules and regulations that were supposed to help maintain a safe working environment for all asbestos workers. It is vital for employers that hire asbestos workers to follow these regulations strictly, Stephen Boyd stated in an official press conference. The area director of OSHA also said that if Delek followed the regulations they could have avoided this tragedy.

Details regarding the fine and other penalties

Total fines proposed reached a quarter of a million dollars, because of the following:

  • Lack of adequate maintenance and repairs for processing equipment
  • Electrical standards were not met by several equipment items
  • Portable fire extinguishers were not where they were supposed to be or they were inadequate
  • Asbestos and benzene regulations and restrictions were completely overlooked

The OSHA office in Dallas started investigating on the 20th of November, when vapors from a flammable liquid ignited after the rupture of a fuel line. This was the result of the above mentioned lack of maintenance.

The response

Despite the loss of life, the refinery started activity as soon as the fire was stopped and all required repairs were made. The Delek president stated, regardless of the problems ahead, that the fire stopped activity only temporarily, and happily announced that the refinery which was able to process 60000 barrels of oil each day will be up and running at its’ full capacity, already being able to handle large amounts of oil.
