Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which affects the lining of lungs. It is also called malignant mesothelioma. Approximately 2000 to 3000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in USA which is 3 percent of total cancer cases.
The life expectancy in mesothelioma cancer is approximately one year. There are three types of Mesothelioma namely pleural, peritoneal and pericardial. The basic cause of mesothelioma is inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos fibers are tiny fibers which on inhalation lodge themselves in the linings of lungs and remain there for very long time and for lifetime in some cases. After lodging these fibers develop scar issues in the linings of lungs which causes tumor to grow in these linings. The worst part of this type of disease is that it is incurable and it takes decades to present itself. Sometimes it is misdiagnosed with other diseases like cold, pneumonia and other diseases like them, this due to resemblance of the symptoms of mesothelioma and other diseases. The only option for patients of this kind of disease is to participate in various clinical trials that are help to test new treatments for this disease.
