Father's Asbestos Mesothelioma Cancer Death Blamed on Employer Negligence

An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 Americans die of mesothelioma each year. Luther Defee, a Jefferson County, Texas resident, was one such. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, and the disease that typically remains dormant for 30 years or more is fatal.

Defee developed pulmonary asbestosis and lung cancer from being exposed to asbestos dust while working with Pure Oil (now known as Unocal and Chevron). Defee’s wife and son, Willie Mae and Michael Lee, have filed suit against the company to claim compensation for Defee’s “painful and terrible death.” They believe the death occurred due to failure of the defendants to warn employees of asbestos’ dangers in the workplace, according to the SE Texas Record. According to Willie Mae and Michael Lee, the companies were aware of the asbestos ridden environment and its implications for the workers like their spouse/father.

Luther Defee’s unfortunate story is not new; it is well known that asbestos exposure causes a variety of diseases. Mesothelioma doctors and asbestos-related treatment centers have no cure to offer the patients. And also, the long gestation period of the disease makes it difficult to do anything other than offer palliative care to individuals exposed to asbestos fiber laden air.
